Driveways, Bathtubs, Decks and Home Theater Equipment

Home Theater No Comments

What do all these things have in common?  They are all part of our house now.  Lots of progress has happened since my last post.  I wish I could post more often but I am stuck in a project that is simply killing all my free time.  Anyway, there's been so much updated that I figured I needed to post some of the pictures.

First things first, we have a driveway! Bridget parked her car in the garage for the first time this past Sunday when we went to clean the house so that the hardwood flooring could be put down this week. Pictures of that to come later this week.

A Month's Progress

Home Theater 2 Comments

It's been nearly a month since I've posted an update.  This definately felt like they slowed down after the framing and brick were completed but I've got a feeling that it's all going to come together here in the month of November.   All I can say is that our move in date is going to make the holidays a bit hectic for the Licciardi family.  Bring it on...

Almost Time For Drywall!

Home Theater 1 Comment

So, by now Bridget and I are looking forward to getting into the new house.  The roof is on, HVAC is in place, electrical and plumbing completed.  Brick was delivered and this morning a crew of about what seemed to be 50 people arrived at the house ready to do the work on the exterior.  We met with the cabinet maker to go over the final plans for our kitchen and pick out cabinet fronts for the bedrooms, laundry and kitchen area.  Bridget decided to go to a paint store this evening to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices available for something as simple as white cabinets.  There's alot to get completed and she's holding out hope that we'll be able to move in before Christmas.  Unfortunately, I think Christmas is an aggressive timeframe.  Last wee's rain delay and the lack of brick labor to do our home has costs us.  We'll be lucky to move in by January 15th at the pace we're moving which isn't slow but it is not fast either.

On to the pics because without them it didn't happen right?

We're Almost Under Roof

Home Theater 2 Comments

Everyday, we're still seeing progress on the house though at this point in the process it feels like progress is happening a bit slower.  The framers are completely done.  The plumbing is in and the electrical is run.  I spent this weekend running network, coaxial and speaker wire.  HVAC is mostly in with a couple more days work left.  Most importantly, the roof is being installed.  That's a big deal for two reasons.

1) The backlog of work that the roofing companies have here in Louisville is still massive, months after the storm that brought the hail damage to everyone in the city.
2) Once we're under roof, work can begin on the inside of the house.  We're both excited to see drywall get hung, floors laid, cabinets installed and such.

So, that said, I'll dive into the pictures.  This post is a bit special for me.  I poured two solid days of work into the house this weekend running Cat6, coaxial and speaker wire. No one to blame on this house if it is not run properly.  That said, a house is a much larger job than a basement.  I vastly underestimated the time it would take.

Plumbing, Windows and Exterior Trim

Home Theater No Comments

Another week has passed on the construction of our new home and again we see progress.  I can't tell you how cool it feels to see the progress of something that Bridget and I have been planning for over a year.  Our last home was on the market for 260+ days before selling on June 4th.  This project started June 8th and while it started off slowly, it's really picked up steam over the past few weeks.

The house is completely framed.  I do not believe they have anything left to do.  The outside trim is up.  The porch is framed.  The back door is installed.  Pretty much all of the missing items that remained on the framing list are now installed in the house.  Plumbing looks like it is completed as well, including a built in gas line for a grill on the back deck.  Goodbye trips to Walmart for gas tanks.  Next week is plumbing and electricity followed by low voltage wiring.  I'm walking through the house on tuesday morning with the electrician and I'm pretty sure the same will happen next week with the guy from Century Home Entertainment.  For the latter, we're waiting on Bridget's uncle's crew to get finished with the HVAC installation.

On to the pictures:

What Can Happen in a Day

Home Theater No Comments

It's pretty amazing what can happen in a day and I don't even have pictures of it all.  In addition to what I am showing in this followup post, the rest of the windows are in and the front and garage exterior door are installed.  The front door itself, back slider and garage doors are all that remains of the doors and windows.

Two Weeks Into Framing

Home Theater No Comments

So...  We are now two weeks into framing and we're getting close to completion.  Today, the doors and windows arrived and when I finally made it out to the house at around 6:30pm, the crew was getting ready to put the sliding glass doors into the opening in the back of the house.  I suspect that they will be working on the windows tomorrow while the HVAC guys are there.  I've learned that if you are going to do framing for a living, weekends are not time off.  This framing crew is working every day dawn to dusk.  I gotta hand it to them.

It's been a bit since I posted pictures so I am going to do a big massive post with pictures.  I apologize for any routers and modems that melt under the stress.  :)

GenCon 2012

Game Industry No Comments

I'd been meaning to get back to GenCon since the last time I went up for a Sunday afternoon in 2008.  My memory of 2008 was that there was much to see on the MMO front.  World of Warcraft had a playable demo of its latest expansion.  There was an Intel video game bus.  Champions and Warhammer Online were both playable as was either Lord of the Rings Online or Dungeons and Dragons Online.  At the time, the MMO scene was vibrant and GenCon seemed like the closest convention I could attend to see some of the upcoming video games.  Soo...  I pitched the idea to a couple friends and figured we'd go up for two days, play some games and play a pile of MMOs.  With Guild Wars 2 about ready to launch, we were hoping to get a glimpse of the game in advance.  Anthony was the only one that wound up able to go and I feel bad because there were a grand total of two MMOs on display, both Turbine properties, DDO and a soon to be released followup free-to-play MMO called Neverwinter.  Yawn...  There was a fantastic looking demo for Mechwarrior Online at the Catalyst Game Labs booth.  Might have to buy that one.

First Floor Nearly Complete

Home Theater No Comments

As promised, I've assembled a few choice photos from the hundreds I've taken so far and put them into an update post for Friday evening.  Progress is coming along quite nicely now that framing has begun.  We're estimating that the rest of the framing work will be completed in the next two weeks.  The crew is working dawn until dusk most nights and I believe they are planning on working the weekends as well.  (Advance apologies to my new neighbors for any of the noise.)  As of right now, all of the walls are up except for the back wall with the 12' sliding glass doors and a couple of the walls in the foyer.

Finally, Framing Has Begun

Home Theater No Comments

When we last left off, we had a foundation built and pictures of the piles and piles of rock that were dug out of our property to make room for the foundation.  Walls were up, I was debating the installation of a storm shelter and we were anxiously waiting for the framing to start.  Things looked like they were about to take off and I was hoping this next post would show sticks in the air.  Turns out that the rock impacted more than just the foundation.  The framers that were scheduled to come in the week after the basement were finished, moved on to another job while they waited for us to get finished digging out the basement.  That cascaded into a two week delay in which the mess that was the current job they were on expanded by the day. Our builder called in a favor from her mom's crew and we had framers scheduled to start today.  Of course, it rained today and didn't let up until late in the afternoon.  The upshot here is that we have wood on site and the first pieces of 2x4s have been put in place atop the foundation walls.  With a bit of luck, things will pick up from here and we'll see some real progress with my next blog post.

On to the photos.
